Washington, DC lights up with fall colors and Rock Creek Park is one of the best places to see them. Here’s where I hike in the park for gorgeous autumn views.
Southern Loop via Western Ridge Trail, Rock Creek, Valley Trail
Rock Creek Park, Washington, DC

This beautiful trail links together some of my favorite sections of Washington, DC’s Rock Creek park – offering elevation gains, walks through the pretty native forest, creek views, and lots of fall color to be seen when the leaves start to change.
When I visit Rock Creek Park, I typically opt for a shorter section, encompassing the Valley trail, which allows me a nice escape to nature when I don’t have time to fully leave the city.
But when leaf-peeping time arrives, I really try to soak in as much of the park as I can, and that’s why I recommend this slightly longer loop that will take you all over the park with some diverse trees and views to augment your fall journey.

Please note: this trail is rated as moderate, with a few steeper sections and uneven terrain in many parts. If you’re an experienced hiker, it should be no problem, but it’s important to prepare, as this isn’t just a paved walk in the park.

As with any mid-Atlantic deciduous (non evergreen) forest, this area becomes extremely popular when the leaves start to change, so don’t expect complete solitude unless you’re hiking at very off-peak times.
The last time I hiked this trail, it was definitely crowded in some parts (closer to parking areas), but I did manage to enjoy some peaceful time to myself on certain stretches of the route.
Please enjoy, leave no trace, plan out your day and be prepared, and have a wonderful time!
