Around 3 hours driving from DC, this beautiful campground offers awe-inspiring rock formations, dense forest, and West Virginia’s highest mountain ridges.
My husband and I recently took advantage of a long weekend to get out of Washington, DC and finally explore a geological point of wonder that had been on my outdoors bucket list for some time: Seneca Rocks, West Virginia.

We headed west, over and through the Shenandoah Valley, just into West Virginia on the other side, enjoying the plentiful mountain and river views until arriving at camp about 3 hours later.

We chose to stay at Seneca Shadows campground for this trip, where numerous tent sites offer views of the main geological attraction of this area: Seneca Rocks.
The campground is run by the U.S. Forest Service, and sites can be reserved through Recreation.gov. We really enjoyed our time here, and the rocky views were truly incredible!
From the campground, recreation opportunities abound. There is plenty of hiking in the area, a river you can float or paddle, and a really nicely done visitor center maintained by the Forest Service.

Seneca Rocks was the perfect getaway for me and my husband, because it offered the outdoors exploration I’m always looking for, and allowed my less outdoorsy husband the comfort he needed.
We saw tons of beautiful cabins for rent in the area and definitely plan to come back and try them out.
Have you visited Seneca Rocks or Seneca Shadows campground? How did you like it?
